This year’s National Donut Day was a blast. I stumbled upon the famous Randy’s Donut at Inglewood – the shop with a big giant donut on the roof. You probably have seen them before in movies, such as Iron Man 2. It was a throwback to the 50s with a classic drive thru. Yes, Randy’s does have drive thru for donuts – they actually have two windows to serve their customers. Because it was donut day, they were giving out free donut holes.
I tried the glazed and chocolate covered Devil’s food cake donuts. They were amazing with my Starbucks French Roast Dark coffee. I even bought a dozen back to share with my coworkers. At first, my lady coworkers hesitated – may be due to high calories? Though, after the rest of the guys commented on how great the donuts were, everybody started digging in.
I took whatever leftover donuts home at the end of the day. They still tasted great. Since I was home, as the famous quote by Homer Simpson says, “Mmm …beer” “Mmm… donuts”, I was looking for beer to drink with the donuts. I didn’t stock any sweet beer, found instead a bottle of apple cider, Martinelli’s Sparkling Gold Medal, unopened from previous parties.
I opened one to go along with the donuts. The sweetness of the Apple was added to the sweetness of the sugary donuts. The acidity of the cider was able keep the sweetness under control by keep cleansing the palate. Overall, it was a great combo. Guess the beer-donut thing is for next time. Sorry, Homer.
Just so you know, there are many recipes on the internet for Apple Cider Donut and Cake. Seek them out. If you want to go all out for some amazing donuts, you can always try a Demi-Sec sparkling wine, such as NV Gruet Demi-Sec Methode Champenoise. Bon Appetit!
